Academic Advising at Durham Tech: Clarifying Expectations and Identifying Opportunities

Many respondents to the Fall 2014 Faculty Expectations Task Force Survey indicated that academic advising is a source of frustration for them. This interactive workshop is intended to start a dialog about how the college can improve faculty experiences (and student experiences!) with advising. Workshop participants will consider National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) recommendations; review possible college guidelines for faculty advisors; and contextualize recommendations and guidelines for Durham Tech’s culture.

Online Course Guidelines – Putting Them into Practice

What are the essential elements of a “quality” online course? The college’s Distance Learning Advisory Team sought to answer this question by articulating a set of Curriculum Online Course Guidelinesfor Durham Tech which were approved earlier this year. The goal was to provide a streamlined list to guide instructors who are new to online teaching, to help those with experience identify ways to improve, and to assist administrators who supervise online courses. In this session, we’ll review the guidelines and the research that went into developing them, and discuss a variety of resources to help instructors implement them. Participants – with or without online teaching experience! – are invited to bring your questions and/or ideas for putting the guidelines into practice.

Metacognition as a Tool to Improve Learning

Despite the large amount of time some students claim to study, they just can’t seem to get a high grade on the exam!  Metacognition (thinking about one’s own thinking) theory provides numerous strategies that engage students in a reflective way to take charge of their own learning and improve their study skills.  This presentation will focus on the work of Dr. Saundra McGuire in the metacognition field and introduce attendees to numerous methods of helping their students “think about their own thinking” to improve learning.  Attendees will leave with the first steps of implementing metacognitive strategies in their own courses.

Are you interested in having “webinar-style” online meetings with your students? Or have you used the Sakai Meetings tool and want to learn more? Here’s your chance to learn from the experts – the folks who build and provide the Meetings tool that’s available within Sakai (aka “BigBlueButton”). Charmaine Akiwenzie of Blindside Networks will “meet” with us remotely via the Sakai Meetings tool. She’ll give a general overview of the tool, demonstrate how to use it, share solutions for common issues you may encounter, and answer questions.

Note: This is a demo and Q&A session, not a “hands-on” training. A separate “hands-on” training on the Sakai Meetings tool is offered on September 10.

Accommodating Students with Disabilities: The Do’s, Don’ts, and Faculty Responsibilities
Presented by Andra Bennett, Disability Services Coordinator

This workshop will explain the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and how it applies to Durham Tech.  We will review the college’s accommodation processes and procedures concerning classroom accommodations, testing, and other related issues.  We will also explain the role of the instructor in the ADA process and instructor rights concerning ADA accommodations. Participants will apply the information using interactive case studies that describe common scenarios at Durham Tech.

Teaching Students How to Learn: Strategies for Success Part Two

Presented by Todd Zakrajsek, Executive Director, Academy of Educators in the School of Medicine, UNC-Chapel Hill

Back by popular demand, Dr. Z returns to continue the discussion on research-based strategies that help students learn. Even when faculty employ the best teaching strategies, students cannot be optimally successful unless they understand their own learning processes. The good news is that there is a plethora of emerging research in the area of the science of learning. That said, understanding and applying findings of cognitive neuroscientists, psychologists, and education specialists in ways that can be used by students is difficult. This workshop will assist faculty to better understand and implement the newest findings in the science of learning so that students may better understand how they acquire, retain, and recall new information.

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) is the scholarly study of teaching and learning in higher education. The field of study features (1) research done by classroom instructors and (2) an expectation of publication of the research. All Durham Tech faculty are invited to attend this information session to learn more about SoTL and the upcoming opportunities to participate in a mini-sabbatical from teaching in order to conduct a SoTL project. Participants will learn the eligibility criteria, application process, and the expectations around the SoTL project. Fundamentals of Financial Aid at Durham Tech

This session will cover several topics including the types of financial aid available at Durham Tech, the application process, eligibility requirements, our NEW verification process with CFI, and understanding degree audit and how grades and attendance affect a student’s financial aid.  Additionally, participants will learn the basics of federal student aid, the meaning of commonly used acronyms (e.g., FAFSA, EFC, NSLDS, CPS, ELC and MPN), and will have the opportunity to participate in discussion. This session is ideal for faculty and staff who engage with students regularly.

Now that most Durham Tech instructors have mastered the Sakai Lessons tool, it’s time to consider turning the reigns over to our students. Instructors can add an area to Lessons, called Student Pages, which allows students (or groups) to add their own Lessons pages and even comment on each other’s pages. Just like you, students can add text, links, files, videos, and images. Marina, Marisa, and Shannon will share how they have used Student Pages to create meaningful assignments for students in their online courses. Becky will provide a tutorial on how to incorporate Student Pages into our Sakai sites. Workshop participants will see real-world examples of successful Student Pages, learn the basics of how to use Student Pages, and brainstorm possible uses for Student Pages in their content areas.

In this session, Amy Netzel, Accessibility Technologist at Wake Tech, will explain what online accessibility is, who it affects, and why it’s important. And she will share specific tips instructors can start using today to make their learning materials more accessible. Instructors who teach online or hybrid courses are strongly encouraged to attend. The presentation is appropriate for those who teach face-to-face classes as well.

Join the Page Turners this spring in reading the book What the Best College Teachers Do by Ken Bain. In the book, Bain looks at 100 professors who are thought to be excellent based on having the praise and respect of students, their division, and the broader academic community. He discusses his major conclusions, including findings about preparation, the treatment of and interaction with students, and setting up the learning environment. He looks at what the professors believe and tell stories illustrating how these beliefs influence their actions. The ideas presented are very applicable, insightful and inspirational. We’ve all had students who claim that they studied FOREVER for the exam, only to get low scores. One strategy to help student improve their learning and retention of information is metacognition, or “thinking about how you think and learn.” Based on the work of Dr. Saundra McGuire, our Faculty/Staff Interest Group (FIG) implemented metacognitive strategies in various science courses to see if they improved student learning, retention, and grades. While the outcome was varied, there were signs of success, and a few outright amazing achievements! Come learn what we discovered about our students, and leave with the ability and knowledge to integrate metacognitive strategies into your own courses…in the form of a detailed handout of the most useful strategies we found! Light refreshments will be provided.

Mental Health First Aid

Adult Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour training course designed to give members of the public skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Just as CPR training helps a layperson without medical training assist an individual following a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid training helps a layperson assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis. Participants will recognize the potential risk factors and warning signs for a range of mental health problems, including: depression, anxiety/trauma, psychosis and psychotic disorders, substance use disorders, and self-injury.

You can all do that with Zaption, a free online tool that lets you create an interactive video “tour.” You can find a video (or upload your own) and add “stopping points” throughout the video (inserting questions, images, text or links). Each student’s viewing activity and responses to questions are recorded and available for you to review in multiple ways. Like all good instructors, we think about our course learning objectives as we plan, organize, and implement class materials, but how do we know that what we are busy planning, organizing, and implementing will actually help students meet those learning objectives? The answer lies in our understanding of Bloom’s Taxonomy, particularly the crossroads where The Knowledge Dimension and The Cognitive Process Dimension meet. In this TLC presentation, Lyndsay will prove to you that there really is a method to your madness as you develop your teaching materials, whether you are aware of it or not. She will also make suggestions for how to think about your use of Bloom’s more systematically and deliberately as you plan, organize, and implement class materials and in the revision of your own teaching philosophy.

University Transfer student Lisa Fowler first met with Heidi White back in September 2014 because she wanted to have an experience traveling outside the US.  Less than one year later, Lisa returned from a fully-funded (thanks to the Gilman Scholarship!) 3-week program in Jamaica where she volunteered in the deaf schools and learned about Jamaican culture.  Come hear about Lisa’s journey – including the research and preparation, the scholarship application process, the Humanities Course on Jamaican Culture taught by Tracy Mancini, and what deaf education is like in Jamaica vs. in the US.  Information on how other Durham Tech students can have funded study abroad experiences through national study abroad scholarships will also be shared.

This workshop is a hands-on introduction to the Sakai Meetings tool, an open source web-conferencing tool that allows instructors to give online presentations, work with an online whiteboard and chat with remote students. In this hands-on workshop, participants will create a web conference meeting, practice leading a meeting, and attend a meeting as a student, using the Sakai Meetings tool. Participants will upload presentations, use a whiteboard, chat, work with different layouts, and share their desktop.

Flipping Out in the Classroom and Other Strategies to Enhance Student Engagement

Are you tired of watching your students yawn or even worse snooze through your class, while you do all of the talking? Attend this session and you will learn about our experience with the Flipped Classroom model and hopefully leave with some strategies on how to incorporate flipped components into your own classes. Over the past year, we implemented a flipped module on cell biology across multiple Anatomy and Physiology I classrooms. In the flipped learning model, students are given content before class in an accessible way and are expected to have a basic understanding of the material before coming to class. During class, students apply their acquired knowledge through discussion and hands-on activities – clinical case studies were used in our classroom. Finally students complete a homework assignment that reinforces concepts and allows the instructor to assess their understanding of the topic. The evidence is mixed on whether flipped classroom models increase test scores, but it certainly increases active learning and student engagement. Light refreshments will be provided.

Streamline your advising processes and simplify course planning and registration for your students!  Beginning in Spring 2016, all incoming students will be advised in the college’s new Self-Service system.  Participants in this training session will learn how to advise students in the new Self-Service web application.  This includes helping students build course plans, approving course plans, archiving plans, and performing “What If?” program analyses.  Time will be allotted at the end for hands-on practice with sample student scenarios in the test environment.  All advisors should plan to attend one of the Self-Service Advisor Training sessions.

Office Mix is a free add-in for PowerPoint that’s designed for educators. With Office Mix you can add audio narrations to your PowerPoint presentations, include a screen cam video of yourself talking (if you want), draw on the screen as you talk, insert quiz questions for students to answer, and publish to the “cloud” for easy linking from Sakai. You can also see detailed data on what each student viewed and for how long, as well as each student’s answers to any questions you inserted. In this workshop you’ll learn how to enhance your PowerPoints with narration, quiz questions, and more; publish and link your presentation from Sakai; view analytics on students’ activity; and edit presentations as needed. Participants must be comfortable creating and editing PowerPoint slides.

This presentation has been scheduled to make up for January’s missed session due to inclement weather.

The SPA 111 FIG will present their strategy to increase student motivation and decrease anxiety in the classroom. The team will discuss how weekly forums and a final passion project helped motivate students by encouraging self-reflection, goal-setting and allowing freedom of choice in a class project. Participants will leave with ideas for incorporating academic freedom into their own courses. Light refreshments will be provided.

This workshop is a hands-on introduction to the Sakai Meetings tool, an open source web-conferencing tool that allows instructors to give online presentations, work with an online whiteboard and chat with remote students. In this hands-on workshop, participants will create a web conference meeting, practice leading a meeting, and attend a meeting as a student, using the Sakai Meetings tool. Participants will upload presentations, use a whiteboard, chat, work with different layouts, and share their desktop.

Best College TeachersJoin the Page Turners this spring in reading the book What the Best College Teachers Do by Ken Bain. In the book, Bain looks at 100 professors who are thought to be excellent based on having the praise and respect of students, their division, and the broader academic community. He discusses his major conclusions, including findings about preparation, the treatment of and interaction with students, and setting up the learning environment. He looks at what the professors believe and tell stories illustrating how these beliefs influence their actions. The ideas presented are very applicable, insightful and inspirational. Bring your lunch; the TLC will provide drinks. This session will discuss the following sections of the book: Chapters 1-4, which includes the chapters from the session missed in January.

In this session, guest speaker Darrin Evans will explain what web accessibility is, who it affects, and why it’s important. And he will show how instructors can utilize color, structure, images, web links, and multimedia in ways that make online content accessible to all learners. Instructors who teach online or hybrid courses are strongly encouraged to attend. The presentation is appropriate for those who teach face-to-face classes as well.

Starting in the summer of 2015 a group of Durham Tech students and community members met to learn about various aspects of Cuba through a Continuing Education class.  They then travelled to Cuba for a people-to-people exchange travel program in October 2015. Come see and hear about the journey to Cuba and reflections on what the group anticipated, what they actually saw and heard while there, and what they predict for the future of the changing Cuba.

Add Interactivity to Videos with Zaption

Do you assign online videos for your students to watch? Do you wish you could track whether students are watching them, or ask questions during the video to check their understanding? You can all do that with Zaption, a free online tool that lets you create an interactive video “tour.” You can find a video (or upload your own) and add “stopping points” throughout the video (inserting questions, images, text or links). Each student’s viewing activity and responses to questions are recorded and available for you to review in multiple ways. In this workshop, we’ll create a free Zaption account; find a video; add interactive questions, images, and text in the video; publish the video “tour” and share the link with others.

Common Methods of Online Cheating and What You Can Do to Stop It

Guest speaker Jeff Kaplan will explore how classic ways of cheating on exams have evolved to take advantage of distance education and online testing by inventive students. He’ll discuss common and some highly innovative ways students are circumventing academic integrity and testing technologies. The presentation will highlight a range of low and high-tech methods, deterrents, and services that exist to help preserve academic integrity.

Jeff Kaplan is Director of Partner Relations at ProctorFree, an online proctoring firm based in Charlotte NC. He has taught entrepreneurship at the University of Florida and presents nationwide on issues concerning assessment and academic integrity in higher education.

One tool colleges use to help keep campuses safe and welcoming environments for students, faculty, staff, and visitors is their Student Code of Conduct. At Durham Tech, the Code has been going through our college-wide review process for revision. Come to this session to discuss the revised procedures and get the answers to these questions (and others you may have):

1) What are the changes in the procedures?
2) How will these changes affect faculty and staff?
3) What are the possible sanctions a student would be subject to?
4) If I witness a student engaging in a behavior that is disruptive to the learning environment (or that simply causes me concern), what are my options for handling the situation?
5) What are the reporting expectations for faculty and staff?
6) How will these reports be managed? (Spoiler alert: The answer to #6 includes the creation of a campus Care Team and Threat Assessment Team).

Come learn about these new opportunities for making connections on campus and to hear about previous participants’ experience in the program. This panel discussion will summarize current college-wide initiatives to support students’ career discernment and will present strategies and resources that faculty advisors can use immediately.

Globalization in education is a term that has been defined as the integration and convergence of information, culture, and knowledge into the curriculum. In order to adequately equip our students Crawford and Kirby (2003) have posited that global education is essential to students’ development of knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for future employment and for building successful relationships in an increasingly interconnected and pluralistic society. As a result, instructors have a challenge to create assignments and curriculum that can help students understand the world in the context of science, mathematics, health, humanities, and technical programs. In this session, practical resources and ideas will be conveyed to assist instructors in the creation of these globalized lesson plans in order to help our students be prepared in our global society as they continue their education and/or begin their careers.

Transparent Teaching: Can You See Me Now?

In September 2015, the Chronicle of Higher Education published an article titled “The Unwritten Rules of College” about an effort at UNLV to improve teaching and learning by improving students’ metacognition and encouraging instructors to learn about current data on promising teaching practices (access the article here via NCLIVE; you may be prompted to log in using your WebAdvisor credentials). Transparent teaching features three basic practices that can be applied to any course, subject, or instructional delivery method. Participants in this presentation and discussion will learn what those three basic practices are, what national data exist supporting this project, and how they can put the three basic practices to work in their classes.

Ever since teachers introduced the concept of syllabi, they have encouraged students to utilize them. The problem is most syllabi are not student centered or student friendly. This presentation will focus on research based ways to improve your syllabi so that they will be more widely used and referred to. This presentation will be hands on and also discuss aspects such as: what belongs in a syllabus, what can you get rid of, details that should be included, how to include the best visuals, etc.  Most of the information was taken from a presentation at a conference of the National Resource Center for the First-Year Experience and Students in Transitions as presented by Dr. Christine Harrington, psychology and college success professor at Middlesex County College.

It’s the eighth annual “favorite tech tools” sharing session! Instructional Technologies staff will share some of our favorite tech tools for instruction. The focus is on “low barrier” tools that are free (or cheap) and relatively easy to jump in and starting using without training. We’ll discuss examples of ways to use the tools to enhance instruction. Light refreshments will be served.
